Veganmofo: Day 7: Homtown food/ Grocery Haul Halifax

Since I cheated and already posted a #VeganDonair and the Donair is what Halifax, NS is likely most famoous for in terms of dishes I figured I would use this post to show you folks my recent food hauls and talk a bit about food prices in Nova Scotia.

Halifax and Nova Scotia have some of our countries worst food prices, which makes eating and eating well in this province a struggle for many families. I am fortune enough to get by most weeks and longer at under 100$ or more by shopping of flyers and spending time doing my homework on what's on sale where.

The biggest budget tip would be to check your flyers, stick with whole foods, try and keep a stock of staples and check the discount produce rack. Through getting cheap frozen vegetables when they are on sale and buying produce stores are trying to clean then freezing it myself I get by.

As you can see this is a pretty decent haul that will last me over 1 week. Total cost: 59.28$
So anyway here is my grocery haul! I lucked out hitting super store on barrington street because they had all kinds of Asian Vegetables marked way down.

Everything pictured here came out to a total of 59.28$ including a few splurge purchases like Vegan Cheese (4.99$ it was 1$ off the usual 5.99$) and both Vegan Pepperoni( 4.49 which was reduced from 5$) and Vegan Ground Round, again reduced to 3.79$ where the more expensive purchase followed by the giant cereal bag which was 9.49$. I know cereal is crazy expensive.

Because I found baby bok choy on sale for 1.99$ each plus one bag was reduced by another 50% off , Daikon raddish for 1.38$ and Nappa Cabage for  1.75$ I figured I would load up on ingredients for noodle bowls and dumplings. As I have some dumpling wrappers in the freezer I added some hot peppers, thick rice noodles, cucumber, ginger, and green onions to the cart along with some soft tofu (1.99$ each) which is the best price I've seen on tofu in ages.

I was also able to score some broccoli, cauliflower, orange, bag of apples, and yellow peppers all on the reduce rack taking typically 5$ range veggies down to under 2$ each. I splurged on the cereal because it's one of the few foods A will eat and having a quick breakfast option for a week never hurts.

Because I had company over on the weekend I splurged on both Mock Meats to make a giant pot of spaghetti sauce, a tradition with my guest and the ingredients to make a vegan pepperoni pizza because it's cheaper then ordering out. I also got hotdog buns 50% off for A, as he has leftover hot dogs from his grocery run and I think I have some veggie dogs in the freezer. If not I'll have to try out the carrot dog recipe as I have 2 kl of carrots in the fridge.

The sales on vegetables and the 50% rack really paid off this trip because I was able to get fruit that wasn't bananas (apples 1.49$) and fresh vegetables including a selection of heartier greens that will do well in the freezer or cold room.

I also got mushrooms on special for 2.50$ and loaded up on self stable vegan milk as we'd been running out. I got more bananas, green ones as I had 3-4 from last shopping trip. I also got some vegan instant ramen that can be bulked up with the vegetables and tofu + broad rice noodles for hot pot.

This food will likely last me over a week and I'll show some bulk preps for freezing things before they go bad and hopefully have some further posts coming up on how I used everything pictured below plus a super fun haul form the Asian Grocery Store too.

This shop could have been done for a bit less without the splurge items, but considering how many luxury items I purchased and the volume of food gotten for under 60$ I think I did ok. This will easily last 2+ weeks combined with foods I have at home in my pantry and freezer.

In fact, I could have gotten away with just the fresh produce order as I do have some rice noodles and other pastas at home. But given our house guests I wanted to be a bit fancier. Making your own seitan mock meats or using the TVP I have stored up would give you an equally tasty meal with less $$ and just a bit of prep work. Same with making your own cheese.

It is also possible I could have further reduced this cost by getting some vegetables at Giant Tiger or No Thrills through shopping around, but for a one stop shop I am pretty happy with the totals.

Full breakdown of cost in the photos above! Hot Dog Buns and a Can of Campbells soup were for A as he won't eat homemade food and hadn't gone shopping in a while.

Veganmofo: DAY 1: Share your favourite food

Ok, so the blog post is a bit late as I was dealing with visiting family but I used that as an opportunity to share one of my favourite foods from Halifax suitable a Vegan Donair. Lately with unpacking the apartment and my knee injurying (kitchen unpacking/use-ability is still in flux!) so my favourite food has been food I didn't have to prepare myself :P.

So I took my Dad across the bridge to Halifax for Johnny K's Seitan Donair. No Vegan Donair sauce saddly but since I prefer spicy sauce the substitution for red chili sauce is a-ok with me and the vegetarian donairs are vegan! Hurray!

I got a classic style donair combo with fries [Although I usually get the Gyro because it's the a donair with Fries INSIDE and more bang for buck]. But since I was craving fries because let's face it potatoes are my one true favourite food.

Gloriously fried potatoes! The side fries were actually way more than I thought so the wrap, soft drink and fries for 9.99$ is a great deal.

My dad whose favourite food is also seitan, opted for the healthier donair box which is basically the donair seitan on top of fries or salad (he got salad).

Happy MOFO!

VeganMofo 2015! A Lazy Food Bloggers Journey

Hey Folks,

Welcome back to Vegan Month of Food 2015! A lot has changed since my last posts, best of all I have started working in a Vegan Resturant Kitchen here in Halifax (EXCITED). You can check out my new work place Wild Leek in Halifax on Windsor st or on social media or our website http://wildleek.ca/

In bonus news just as VEGANMOFO began our fridge broke, so we've been without one for a week or so and are just now finding out our landlords have bought a new one (which won't arrive until Tuesday, sadness). Basically, what this all means is I am likely going to keep my posts short, and they will likely be on social media for a few days before I get a chance to move them over here.

And on the weekends, they will likely be posts about my work!

This wasn't the first time I'd made cupcakes at work, but this was my first shot making them by myself and icing them, anyone who has seen my dessert food porn or this blog knows decorating isn't my forte. But I think these guys turned out pretty great, they are our basic vegan vanilla cupcakes with a chocolate mint icing and vegan mint candies that I painstakingly sliced into thinner translucent slices for magic.

Daily special was a brilliant 'spicy' tomato chickpea soup, which I ate for lunch with the pakora burger! So good a few regulars asked us to place it on the menu. I added raw jalapenos to both my sandwich and soup and it was amazing.

The pakora burger was topped with our vegan house mayo, a ginger date chutney, bitter lettuce greens and cucumber. Great mixture of sweet, savory, crispy and creamy. We used an assortment of veggies in the pakora (cauliflower, spinach, onion, carrot, etc)
HAPPY VEGAN MOFO!

Halifax Eats: Heartwood's new Bruch

Ok, so I've blogged about Heartwood a few times. But being the last remaining veggie place in Halifax (there is obviously Formosa's in Dartmouth), it's bound to happen.

Recently they've had a few ascetic make overs but best of all they have started serving Brunch! With an all new brunch menu from 10am-3pm on Saturdays and Sundays [Also they are now open Sundays!].

Over all exciting times.

I went with my Dad who was in town and my little brother Zane.

I did the classic tofu scramble platter: comes with fries and toast. Zane opted for the Wild Card Salad, brunch edition, which turned out to feature a tiny bit of everything they serve, so I was jealous. Dad went with the Kamut/Spelt Waffles topped with berry sauce and fruit salad.

Everything was super tasty and we lucked out with our fresh coffee and fresh mango/orange juice as the special of the day along with Banana Walnut Muffins.

As the platters were huge, I lucked out with leftovers so I have breakfast tomorrow too!

Halifax Eats: Sweet HereAfter

Greetings all, I figured since Halifax has been changing as usual it was time to bring back this series of posts on Halifax Eats. Sadly not all the places I've posted about still exist and some menus have changed. But thankfully some new places have opened as well.

One of which is The Sweet HereAfter Artisans cheesecake shack offering a daily vegan cheesecake of rotating variety and always tasty.

The shop is super cute with booths and tables for intimate desserts, parties or coffee/tea and cake with friends. Decor is amazing and they've added a fun little photo booth!

Plus I hear rumours about being able to order whole cheese cakes for your events! Score!!

Although they only offer one vegan cake a day, the flavours are awesome and they are always inventing more and love to talk ideas.

I've done the Oreo, mocha, peanut butter and a few other brilliant vegan varieties. The owners are super nice and great to chat with.

This beauty was my second piece after Alan and I ate  the last of that days Vegan Cheesecake they had just brought out the one for the next day (fresh out of the oven) to our table so I could see it. I decided to grab a piece to go for breakfast.

Coconut Lime Vegan Cheese Cake with Mango puree!

I love the coconut throughout and the crust seems to be a nut/shredded coconut combo with a good sweet crunch!

YUM!

Veganmofo; HRM Hidden Gem: Formosa Tea House

If you know me, you have probably heard me take place in Darthmouth Bashing. It happens, the bridge thou shall not cross etc. However, let me tell you about a magical Vegan Heaven that exists across the bridge of doom.

Formosa's Tea House.

This place specializes in Vegetarian Foods, ingredients are listed on the menu so vegan items can be found out. They import all kinds of funky fake meats and their portions are huge for the prices.

Plus they have tea! Lots and lots of tea and other gifts.

Their snack menu contains a million different Vegan Delights, dumplings steamed or fried are my favourite. Mock Ham, Cabbage, Mushrooms, Tofu and all kinds of goodness lurks inside. Plus Vegan Oyster Sauce. Amazing.

They do Wontos, soups and curries. Steam buns of all kinds (many vegan ones like the BBQ Bun and Red Bean).

We had a mini vegan party to celebrate Blake Graduating. I forgot again to take photos, too busy eating Sorry!.

Here's my Vegan Red Curry Mutton with rice (all meals have rice or noodle option).

And the 20 dumpling order we split around the table, this is half way through the feasting is up top.

The owner is adorable and amazingly helpful, our tea is always re-steeped and he does the neat Green Tea Pouring with the ceramic shots and encourages you to try it.

You can also get their meals tax free and frozen to go. And the offer complimentary candies and fresh fruit with your meal! One of my new favourite places.

Veganmofo: Halifaxs Eats Backlog Sushi style!

Hey folks,

I have some older mofo photos for you from earlier this month when my friend Geoff came to town and we hit up B-Well Sushi Cafe. One of the best things about this place is there prices, all the rolls are around 4-6$ including dragon rolls. Mind you they do up all their rolls in smaller pieces, but they list exactly what is and is not vegan on their menu and their sushi pizza is amazing!

Very good place to relax, sip coffee or tea and enjoy some light tasty Japanese food.

I sadly forgot to photography all of the meal so I wound up missing some goods like the adorable and super tasty sushi pizza. But I did manage to get this shot of some rolls, so not all was lost.

They also added some new menu items like iced plum wine and udon bowls which can be made vegan. Mine accidentally came with imitated crab, but everything else was amazing.

It's one of the few places were getting an assortment of vegan style rolls won't break your bank and Edamame is 3$ instead of 5$. I love, love, love Edamame but somehow paying 4$+ turns me off it every time. So I enjoy getting an order or two while I'm here.

They also have wifi so you could get some work done or hang out for longer.

I believe The right is the Yam Tempura and the left is a veggie delight roll with Kanpyo, shitake, cucumber, avocado and possibly some other tasty stuff.

Overall for clear menu marking and pricing, B-well is a great place they also offer soy so you can get Matcha Lattes or amazing ginger tea. Be sure to ask about the lattee mix, one has dry milk but I always forget which.

Sadly their Salad Dressing and Miso Soup are not Vegan,  but Props for writing that on the menu and labelling vegan items as Vegan. The one thing I hate about hitting new or haven't-been-here-in-a-while sushi places is remembering what comes with bonito, what has Dashi/fish stock and whose dressing is mayo based etc. Clear menu labels make B-Well super accessible and their selection goes beyond the simple cucumber roll without breaking the bank.

VeganMofo: Day 2: HeartWood Bakery and Vegan Cafe

The majority of their menu items rely on fresh local produce and changes slightly to accommodate regional flavours and what they have on stock. Lately it's been beets. In everything, included our beet salsa and freshly grated redness over everything.

Whenever I'm feeling under the weather or as if my non-green days have been too many, I hit up heartwood. On cold rainy halifax days, their soups call to me. Different batches each day full of vegetable goodness they never disappoint.

Another daily go to is their special board. The daily special changes daily (duh) so try and get it while it lasts. Unlike most daily specials this isn't a reduced price main, but rather a unique creation made by the kitchen staff based on sheer whim and fairy dust. I've only rarely seen specials repeat, so it's always a good bet to try it out while it's there, because who knows when you'll get the change again.
The special is usually 10.99 and includes a main, side, condiments and other assortments based on the dish. This time it was a vegan Quesadia stuffed with black bean, vegetables, tofu all sauted in spices with some fresh herbs, peppers, onions and shredded carrot. There was a spicy mole sauce on the side, the ww crispy tortilla was topped with their vegan cream sauce. Kinda like cheesy sour scream but with more flavour.

The side was steam greens a heartwood favourite. We also ordered vegan nachos to start. And I couldn't resist dessert, which was much better than I remembered.

The lovely mole sauce

All their desserts are gluten free and often chocolate free as well so i've had issues with the texture (i'm a gluten snob). But the cheese cake today was great!

The lovely chocolate PB, so creamy smooth. Despite their lack of sweeterners it was pleasantly rich and tasty.

VeganMofo: Day 1!

Ok, so a less than impressive start. Despite my lack of cooking, photo taking and general free time, I've decided to post anyway!

Today my food related activities are limited to grocery shopping at Planet Organic the local organic market. But, I bring you halagonians fantastic news. THEY NOW HAVE DAIYA!!!!

I know, I'm soo excited... It's lurking in my fridge now, so stay tuned for some reviews and trials.

What's more as my dad was in town I also splurged on a few new cool vegan items like tofurkey breakfast links and soy yogurts.

I will try to keep up to date with the Mofoing. Mostly a run down of what I manage to eat in a day with my busy schedule and maybe some suggestions for things to make or grab on the go for the busy among us. Specifically, I splurged at the market and bought a lot of processed/ready made foods I normally wouldn't go near for budget reasons.

However, lately my commitment to not buying pre-made has turned into a commitment to not eating because I'm too lazy/busy/tired etc to make food. Which is bad, so sometimes the extra $ on things like mini soy yogurts or other grab and go foods are justifiable if it means eating something when you would otherwise have nothing, go without or eat out (which is not budget friendly!).

I've also been in the bad habit of eating out, a habit I may continue for mofo and do some HRM Vegan Review series of where to eat and what to order!

Happy Mofo everyone!

And because posts are incomplete without photos I bring you Cell Phone shot of the coconut banana creme pie from the HeartWood bakery/cafe. Please excuse the bite marks.

Veganmofo: Weekend Edition! Farmer's Market (Photo heavy)

Hey guys,

sorry for the delay in posts, my friend Katie and I went to the farmer's market in downtown Halifax. Our market is currently being held in the old Keith's Brewery, a older cozy labyrinth of tunnels, floors and boths of farm fresh goodies and local crafts!

There is so much to see and do, traffic (of other people that is) is a bit of an issue, but with their new space down the road they will have event more floors and a much more open space. So although I will miss the charm and maze of the keith's brewery the extra elbow room and being open 4 days a week will be a welcome change.

Let's get started!

Market Atrium

The Market Attrium various fresh produce tables, an apple cider and apples section and two bakers! The mushroom guy no longer seems to be active, but in his place there were some fine produce vendors who made jams, salsas and more!

Ye old market

The Atrium is by far the roomiest portion of the market tour so be sure to savour your personal space while you still can before moving on to the downward winding stair case, or through the various arches, into the craft hallways or back up the stairs for level two and three.

This Market trip not only did I visit Happy Hippie Granola, but I found another granola enthusiast who did all kinds of gluten free mixes, yum!
Happy hippie Granola!

Here is a shot of one of the craft tunnels, there is a great word working guy who has amazing Atlantic products. Beautiful, beautiful work.

in the back of this photo you can see the atrium.
More crafts
More crafts!

I was so tempted by the prospect of fresh garden herbs, but I feared the little guys wouldn't survive the canvas bag and the hike home. So for another day.

This is one of the many apple and cider booths. You can get samples, buy a glass, a liter or two or the gallon sizes. MMMM

I have a few action shots of consumers grabbing some taters

I also came across an amazing new addition. RAW CHOCOLATE! Cocaonibs, pure cocoa, vegan hand made chocolates and raw fudge (with coconut oil or without) So creamy and SAMPLES!

The basement has sweet shops, glass art, wines, jams, soaps and the lovely atlantic hemp. with hemp seed samples

Market

Now between staff of life vegan cinnamon apple rolls or their chocolate cinnamon apple rolls fresh with coffee and tea and this Indian stand it really doesn't matter where else I go. I normally get a chickpea roll (but there are many vegan options, I am just a roll sucker) and they come with lovely side salads.

So if your a hungry vegan warrior, get yourself to your local market. Know your farmers, their practises and get yourself some quality produce. Maybe even some good deals.

Bonus: when I got home and de-stalked the Brussels party stole the stalk and ran around with it all day.
