Veganmofo: Halifax Eats Again!

It's been a while since I've done something for this series because well sometimes I get lazy and stick with what's tried and true. Which makes for some boring reading.

There's a new Sushi Place on Quinpool Road in Halifax. It's busy, hurried, service seems over whelmed but they offer a veggie platter with more than just the basic cucumber, avocado and asparagus rolls. Finally a cheap platter with some flavour! Wasabi House offers a unique spin to the Halifax sushi market. With it's fancy decor and experiments with fruit and other interesting combos.

Starting with a salad, japanese salads are perhaps one of my favour despite not being a salad vegan.

Nice refreshing bust of citrus, less gingery than the usual. Unexpected but nice.
Another appetizing favorite tempura! Which really, you can never go wrong with, but the combo of thin sliced squash and other unexpected additions made it an interesting addition to Halifax's tempura offerings. I liked the different textures Wasabi's offering had with the various cuts and adding some variety to the mix.
Next up was one of the veggie combos, because I always love the savings of a platter but hate the lack luster selection. Now for the really good stuff (which I sadly didn't get to photograph before consuming) I'm talking Yam Tempura roll, Mango jalapeno, banana avocado just to name a few. All of which are outstanding, I mean mango explosion of flavour.

Their yam rolls were small but flavourful with a nice blend of sweet and crispy.
They offer two different veggie combos which can be made vegan (ask for no mayo) I went with the one which offered some selection (the other combo offers tempura tho, so it's a real winner). Here I have Inari; Shitake; Oshinko; shredded cucumber; Avacado Nigiri and classic Cappacado 6 piece for 11.95$
The combos come with Miso and the Salad. Salad is vegan (yay!) but the miso is not, so the great hunt for vegan miso in HRM continues.

It's not often we get Nigiri style vegan options in the city. So that alone was a bit of a treat, something about the tiny rice packets with straps. I love that the combos come with non pink ginger, usual wasabi and fresh lemon! Unusual yes, but man does it ever spark up the rolls. Oshinko was tough but taste, traditional Japanese pickles aren't always present in our offerings.

Their pricing is mid range for Halifax and they always seem busy, so take out might be the better option if you don't want to wait. For their mango and banana rolls I say they are worth the visit. They seem to have a lunch menu which might help cut costs or go group style and share a few key plates. Their menu boasts a whole veggie section and a few tofu entrees so I think a few more visits are in order.

Halifax Eats: Sweet HereAfter

Greetings all, I figured since Halifax has been changing as usual it was time to bring back this series of posts on Halifax Eats. Sadly not all the places I've posted about still exist and some menus have changed. But thankfully some new places have opened as well.

One of which is The Sweet HereAfter Artisans cheesecake shack offering a daily vegan cheesecake of rotating variety and always tasty.

The shop is super cute with booths and tables for intimate desserts, parties or coffee/tea and cake with friends. Decor is amazing and they've added a fun little photo booth!

Plus I hear rumours about being able to order whole cheese cakes for your events! Score!!

Although they only offer one vegan cake a day, the flavours are awesome and they are always inventing more and love to talk ideas.

I've done the Oreo, mocha, peanut butter and a few other brilliant vegan varieties. The owners are super nice and great to chat with.

This beauty was my second piece after Alan and I ate  the last of that days Vegan Cheesecake they had just brought out the one for the next day (fresh out of the oven) to our table so I could see it. I decided to grab a piece to go for breakfast.

Coconut Lime Vegan Cheese Cake with Mango puree!

I love the coconut throughout and the crust seems to be a nut/shredded coconut combo with a good sweet crunch!

YUM!

Veganmofo: Halifaxs Eats Backlog Sushi style!

Hey folks,

I have some older mofo photos for you from earlier this month when my friend Geoff came to town and we hit up B-Well Sushi Cafe. One of the best things about this place is there prices, all the rolls are around 4-6$ including dragon rolls. Mind you they do up all their rolls in smaller pieces, but they list exactly what is and is not vegan on their menu and their sushi pizza is amazing!

Very good place to relax, sip coffee or tea and enjoy some light tasty Japanese food.

I sadly forgot to photography all of the meal so I wound up missing some goods like the adorable and super tasty sushi pizza. But I did manage to get this shot of some rolls, so not all was lost.

They also added some new menu items like iced plum wine and udon bowls which can be made vegan. Mine accidentally came with imitated crab, but everything else was amazing.

It's one of the few places were getting an assortment of vegan style rolls won't break your bank and Edamame is 3$ instead of 5$. I love, love, love Edamame but somehow paying 4$+ turns me off it every time. So I enjoy getting an order or two while I'm here.

They also have wifi so you could get some work done or hang out for longer.

I believe The right is the Yam Tempura and the left is a veggie delight roll with Kanpyo, shitake, cucumber, avocado and possibly some other tasty stuff.

Overall for clear menu marking and pricing, B-well is a great place they also offer soy so you can get Matcha Lattes or amazing ginger tea. Be sure to ask about the lattee mix, one has dry milk but I always forget which.

Sadly their Salad Dressing and Miso Soup are not Vegan,  but Props for writing that on the menu and labelling vegan items as Vegan. The one thing I hate about hitting new or haven't-been-here-in-a-while sushi places is remembering what comes with bonito, what has Dashi/fish stock and whose dressing is mayo based etc. Clear menu labels make B-Well super accessible and their selection goes beyond the simple cucumber roll without breaking the bank.
